Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and goalie Malcolm Subban were in attendance with a handful of other athletes at the By The Hand Kids Club in Chicago.
Toews and Subban joined former Chicago Bears linebacker Sam Acho, the organizer of the event on Thursday, along with Bears players Mitchell Trubisky and Allen Robinson and Chicago Cubs players Jason Kipnis and Jason Heyward as well as a handful of other athletes with ties to Chicago.
None of the athletes were there to speak to the kids. They attended so they could listen.
The group met with 30 kids from three different youth organizations, By The Hand, Westside Health Authority and BUILD, as well as members of the city’s police department.
Subban shared some pictures and thoughts on the event via Twitter.
The goal of the event was to begin to affect real change in the community in light of the death of George Floyd and the resulting nationwide protests.
“We listened to the people who are hurting,” Acho told the Bears team website. “We sat and stood in circles with some kids from the West Side of Chicago, some police officers from the West Side of Chicago and pro athletes as well, and just allowed each other to have an open dialogue about what’s been going on, how do we feel about the situation and where can we go from here.”
