An Oshawa grandfather is a recent winner of the Guaranteed $1 million prize in the Lotto 6/49 draw.
The winning ticket was purchased at Food Basics on Rossland Road in Oshawa.
Nikolaos Kapetan-Georgiu, a 67-year-old retired painter, discovered his win while at a mall with his son.
“I scanned my ticket using a ticket checker and saw the Big Winner message, and all those zeros,” he says, while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. “I checked several times. I told my son I won a million dollars and he said, ‘No way,’” before confirming the win with the shop owner.
The father of seven and grandfather of seven is now planning to move to a new house.
“I’m going to share this with my family. My wife will prepare for retirement and we can focus on enjoying life,” he says. “I’ll help all my kids, that’s what is most important to me.”
He says he does what he can to help his community as well.
“I make regular donations every two weeks to the food bank. Every time I do, I thank God for the chance to help people,” he says. “This win will let me do so much more. Now, I can fulfill my dream of helping more people.”
