LANSING, MI — A Monroe County man is glad he didn’t quit while he was ahead as he eventually won a $2 million jackpot prize playing the Michigan Lottery’s $2,000,000 Bonus game.
“I’d had a pretty good run of luck on the $2,000,000 Bonus game,” said the 56-year-old player who chose to remain anonymous. “I had just won $160 and decided to buy three more tickets and put $100 in my pocket.
“When I scratched it off and saw it was a winner it was over the top! I never imagined winning such a huge prize, but it feels so great!”
The lucky winner bought his ticket at the Speedway gas station, located at 635 Tecumseh Street in Dundee. He recently visited Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing to claim his prize. He elected to receive his prize as a one-time lump-sum of roughly $1.3 million.
With his winnings, he plans on paying off some bills and saving the rest for retirement.
The last player from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot was Cristy Davis of Waterford who won $70 million playing Powerball in February. With her winnings, Davis said she planned to buy a new house and car.
And while she was a lucky winner, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a winner worth $1 million sold in Hartland last year went unclaimed. The ticket was purchased at the Speedway in Hartland, but the winner never came forward to claim the prize. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
